About the Festival

Short + Sweet is the world’s biggest little festival that began in Australia by Mark Cleary and has taken the world by storm, becoming a global festival brand.

Short + Sweet Malaysia is one of Malaysia’s longest-running multi-genre festivals, helmed by Festival Director Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican and Festival Artistic Director Joe Hasham OAM. Housed yearly at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac), Short + Sweet showcases new works that are no longer than 10 minutes each in Film, Stand-up Comedy, Song, Dance, Musical and Theatre.

The festival also runs as a competition as each team vies for top honours. Each segment ends with a prize giving where the winners will be announced.

IMPORTANT: Please read the information below before making your submission.

Rules and Regulations:

1. Only new and original works are accepted i.e. works that have not been performed to a paid audience anywhere in the world prior to the festival dates & will premiere at Short + Sweet Malaysia 2025. Adapted works are not considered new works.

2. Each piece must be timed prior to submission and can only last up to 10 minutes for Film, Musical, Theatre and Dance and up to 5 minutes for Stand-up Comedy and Song. 

3. Open to works in any genre within the category. Work can be in English, Malay, Mandarin & Tamil but do provide subtitles and translation for works in Mandarin & Tamil. 

4. Open to Malaysians and non-Malaysians aged 16 & above. Those below 18 years of age must have obtained parent / legal guardian’s consent to participate.

5. Only group submissions accepted (form your group before submission i.e. director, writer, cast etc).

6. The team members listed in the submission must be the same ones involved in the actual staging. No changes allowed without permission from the Committee.  

7. You can submit more than one submission within each category and across different categories. However only one piece per category will be selected (e.g. Dance). Performers can only perform in one piece within that category. 

8. Submissions must be cleared of copyright and permission must be gotten by the group from all the contributors to the work.

9. Only shortlisted groups will be notified.

10. All submissions must be complete including publicity information or risk disqualification. Access to files, folders or YouTube links must be given to the Committee automatically.

11. All information submitted is deemed accurate and final as it will be used for publicity and marketing. Committee is not obligated to attend to requests for changes. 

12. Shortlisted groups must not withdraw without prior permission from the Committee and must attend in-person technical meeting, technical rehearsal, full dress rehearsal and three show days (except for Short + Sweet Film). Scheduling and running order to be decided by the Committee.

13. All participants must adhere to a good code of conduct in keeping with the spirit of Short + Sweet including behaving in a professional and respectful manner. Otherwise, the participant or group may be asked to leave.

14. The Committee reserves the right to disqualify any participants, amend, and / or change the competition rules as and when necessary.

15. No registration fee to participate and no payment will be made to all participants.

16. The Committee has the right to film / record / photograph the works and participants for marketing and archival purposes which may be released online.

17. The Committee’s decision is final. No appeal will be entertained.
